Welcome

Radio has played an important role in the linguistic and cultural heritage of all European countries. It continues to be ubiquitous, influential and multi-faceted and must be investigated, analysed and theorised.
Radio as a social institution and as an art will benefit from increased attention being paid to it by the academic sector. The development of a discourse and literature based on research on this medium will profit all parties who have an interest in radio.
The Radio Research Section of ECREA fosters and promotes research into all aspects of radio from programming and production to policy and legislation, from audience consumption to public participation and radio’s contribution to the public sphere.
Here you will be able to retrieve information about ECREA's Radio Research Section mission and vision, past and forthcoming events and conferences, and browse through publications and relevant links.

Radio Research Section conference, London 2013

University of Sunderland campus in LondonThe next conference of the Radio Research Section of ECREA will be held at the London Docklands campus of the University of Sunderland, from 11-13 September 2013.

The venue (pictured on the left) is a bright, modern building with excellent lecture theatres and seminar rooms for plenary and panel sessions. It is located two minutes walk from the South Quay station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which is just 15 minutes from Bank station and the rest of the London Underground network.

There are a wide range of hotels, restaurants and bars within easy travelling distance to suit every budget, and South Quay is just seven minutes from the historical and cultural site of the former seagoing vessel Cutty Sark.

We look forward to welcoming as many section members as possible in September. The call will be published next week.

Hans KleinsteuberHans J. Kleinsteuber (1943-2012)
Dear Colleagues of the Radio Research Section, as some of you may have already heard, Hans J. Kleinsteuber passed away last Saturday 18 February 2012 after a struggle with cancer.
A political science professor at Hamburg University in Germany, Hans was an active member in ECREA and our Section. He was an active participant in social and political debates both in his local/national environment and beyond, and keen on generating scholarship that makes a difference in this world. At Hamburg University, Hans created and directed the Research Centre Media and Politics where he and his team worked on issues such as media regulation, European media politics, and public service broadcasting, and where many young scholars learned their way to academia under his guidance.
His passing is a sad loss for ECREA and our Section, to the wider global community of scholars in our field and to the German research and broadcasting environments. Our condolences to his family, work colleagues, former students and close friends.

Radio Research Section supports World Radio Day
The Radio Research Section of ECREA supported the World Radio Day, celebrated with conferences and events worldwide, for the first time, on 13 February this year. The Section had contributed to the initial consultation by UNESCO and was involved in various events to commemorate this new annual event, as the contribution to special programming on RUM, Rádio Universitária do Minho in Portugal. 13 February is a date proclaimed by UNESCO to celebrate radio broadcast, improve international cooperation among radio broadcasters and encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information through radio, including community radios. It’s an occasion to draw attention to the unique value of radio, which remains the medium to reach the widest audience and is currently taking up new technological forms and devices.

An event was also organised by ISCSP at the Technical University of Lisbon, in an afternoon dedicated to radio, by presenting a radio documentary about a special broadcasting that took place in April 2011. There was a very successful radio station in Portugal in the nineties - Radio Energia (Energy Radio), a music-based format for young people. Last year, if it still existed, it would have turned 20 years old. Former Energia practicioners decided to celebrate it and ISCSP had a Energia weekend, running the radio station programming as it used to be, using the web and a local radio station in Lisbon FM frequency to broadcast. Students at ISCSP, coordinated by ECREA Radio Research Section member Paula Cordeiro, developed a radio documentary - Rádio Energia 2.0, using 2.0 tools and decided to organize an event in the context of the World Radio Day. It started at 16.30 with the presentation of the documentary and at 17.00 it continued with a roundtable on radio research in Portugal, presenting recent research results and projects to be developed in next two years. This was followed by two social gatherings (tertulias), the first on Radio as social media with managing directors and programming directors of national and regional radio stations in Portugal, and the secondo on Past and present of broadcasting with a group of current and former media practicioners. The event ended with a 'DJ Battle', including former DJs of the station that have become famous over the last years. The event attracted wide media coverage, from national TV, national radio stations, local radio stations and printed press in Portugal
